Every week the tuākana (senior) class of Whaia te Mātauranga are taught the art of Mau Rākau at the side of Matua Chris. Mau Rakau is the art of working with a stick(rakau), this was used as a weaponry artform for our tupuna. Nowadays Mau Rakau is used to welcome dignitaries or special guests to a marae. The tamariki are taught discipline, teamwork and peseverance through the context of Mau Rakau. The tamariki work their way up to holding a rakau.
