UPDATE#5

20 Paenga Whawha 2020

Kei te mihi nui atu kia koutou.

Congratulations to each and every one of you for your contribution to containing COVID-19. It is great to know the low number of people in our community affected by this deadly virus. Let us be grateful that we have been spared the heartache from COVID-19. Our prayers are with those who have lost loved ones not only in our country but abroad. I encourage you to continue to be vigilant as we head to Level 3 and the easing of the lockdown criteria.

The Board of Trustees approved significant changes that you need to be aware of as we prepare ourselves to return to school. Sutton Park School will continue to be in lockdown and will open ONLY for students and staff. There are strict criteria for anyone to enter Sutton Park School, and the gates are locked from 9:00 am until 2:30 pm. These changes are on our website and I ask that every parent and caregiver familiarise with these changes before we return to school.

The well-being of our students, staff, and community continue to be paramount. Your support is critical for the changes to be effective, and these will be reviewed before the end of this term. Be assured that if any of our staff or students get the virus, Sutton Park School will be closed for a longer period.

School attendance at Level 3 of the lockdown is dependent on the parents. If you feel your children are safe at home and can be supervised while they learn at home, then keep them home. For those with more children, it is possible that some can attend school and some stay home. Teachers will continue to provide on-line learning and learning packs for students away from school. At this stage, the safest place for your child is within your family bubble. We have made significant changes to increase the possibility of our students and staff being safe. However, the Board of Trustees and I cannot assure you, that your child will be safe from the COVID-19 virus at Sutton Park School.

Teachers who are verified to have health conditions that put their health at risk, have been exposed to someone infected with COVID-19, or are caring for an elderly relative are not expected to be at school. Parents with children in these classes will be notified.

This lockdown again is a golden opportunity to connect with your children. Converse with them, teach them some traditions of your family, learn a musical instrument, tell some traditional legends / fagogo / stories, learn how to put down a hangi / umu, cook some traditional dishes and a lot more than you can do at home. An opportunity to learn to read other stories, the Bible, say a prayer, a speech of gratitude, compose a poem or a song, write a letter or card to wish someone well. It is an opportunity for your children to learn from you, so do make the most of it. That may be something that your children will treasure for a lifetime. Do not put yourself or your children under pressure to do the work prescribed for them on-line on in the learning packs provided.

The Team / Whanau Leaders will pack and courier out the devices to families, this week and should arrive by Thursday. The priority for the devices we have, will be for Years 5-8 students. Even though we will return to school on the 29 April, it is still worth-while having these devices at home for our students to use. If you do get one or two devices for your family, do be mindful that our school can ill afford any of these devices to be damaged. So do take good care of them.

Do contact me at principal@suttonpark.school.nz or leave me a message at 021-250-6684 if you need further clarification or support, and I will attend to it. These are surreal times and things will take a while to get back to what we knew as normal. May God continue to be at the heart of your homes, until we are all back together as a whanau.

Sincerely,

Fa’atili Iosua Esera

UPDATE#4

11 April 2020

I pray that you and your families are well while we are apart. I hope the celebration of Easter reminds us of the enormity of the love and grace of our God. He sacrificed his only son for our salvation. I am sure with you helping yourselves and families, this will go a long way to making you all safe. God helps those who help themselves.

I encourage you to heed the advice of the government and the Health professionals so that we can be together again as a whanau in the near future.

Term 2 starts next Wednesday, 15th April. However, we will still be in lockdown and schools are out of bounds for all. Learning for students will continue to be online.

The staff and the Ministry of Education are collaborating on ways to support students’ on-line learning. Thanks to those of you, who responded to the school survey to find out the number of families that are able to use the internet for student learning. Thanks to those of you who have contacted me about the need for more devices to help your children with their learning. I would like to acknowledge the leadership of Mrs Lakokiperitania and Mr Lemanu in this area.

For families with internet access at home, and appropriate devices, there is adequate school work on the school website page. Our team and whanau leaders continue to communicate with teachers in their teams, to ensure there is enough work on-line for our students.

The government through the Ministry of Education has developed learning through designated television channels. I am pleased there is a channel for learning  in reo Maori. For families that cannot access the internet or do not have the right devices, please use this opportunity to learn and master your home languages. Studies for next term is on ‘wellbeing,’ so do use the opportunity to support your child’s knowledge of ways to keep him or her protected from COVID-19.

Total wellbeing includes mental wellbeing, social wellbeing and emotional wellbeing. There is a lot to talk about and share with your children. There will be school and interschool speech competitions in Samoan, Tongan, Reo Maori, and English in the next two terms. Our students will take part in all those contests.

I am hoping that there will also be competition in Cook Island Maori and Niue languages. If there are, we will enter some of our students. So do use this opportunity to learn different aspects of your home culture and language. It is an opportunity for the children to learn to cook different traditional dishes, and learn some of your cultural traditions.

I urge you to heed the advice of the Ministry of Health and the government, so that your homes are free of COVID-19. I pray that in the near future, we will be together again as Sutton Park School family.

There will also be updates on our school website and on community radios. Mrs Mafi, Mrs Tosogi and Whaea Molly have helped in putting notices in Tongan, Samoan and reo Maori. Do contact me at principal@suttonpark.school.nz or leave me a message at 021-250-6684 if you need further clarification or support.

May you be in God’s hands, and wishing you a happy Easter.
