Welcome to all students   Our class is Year ,4,5,6,7, and 8.  We are looking forward to working with them. Parents maybe worried about the number of levels in this room but we are confident working in a multilevel class.  I would like to explain some of the strategies we will be using with the class so that the parents at home can help with the homework and how to encourage children to cope with work that they may feel is difficult.

Homework

Spelling and Vocabulary Program
The children now have two homework notebooks with words in them.  One is the normal spelling homework where children learn their spelling list of words that they should be capable of spelling according to diagnostic testing in the classroom.
The other notebook is similar to the spelling book but for this book the children are not expected to spell every word but they should be able to read these to you.  These are the words that they are using for topic studies.  We are using almost everyday in our classroom. (Y3-4) should be able to read all of these words
(Y5-6) should be able to read these works and write them in a sentence and may know some synonyms. (Y7-8)  should know how to read, write, spell and know most of the meanings of the words.

  • Wairoa Dam (Y4-Y8)

Last Term we went to the Wairoa Dam. We were learning about how water comes from the Wairoa to our houses in Mangere. We learnt that the water is cleaned at the Admore Treatment Plant before it is sent out to Manukau City. Our water is amongst the cleanest in the world.

Ramere 12 o Poutu-te-Rangi,2010 NAKITA HENRY RECOUNT Wairoa Dam

On Wednesday the 10th of march we went to the Wairoa dam with
Rm19,Rm14, Rm15,Rm20,Rm21,Rm22. Firstly we went to the Wairoa dam and then had a little snack and went for a toilet. Secondly we started walking around the dam and saw the reservoir and the pumping station.
We are learning how water comes to our houses. I learnt how pipes are underground and released to the sea. It was unexpectedly how 2 adults 3 children went the wrong way. They went the wrong way because they didn't follow the other people. From thar experience we learnt that we must stick together and stay on the right track and have enough water. When I went to the lookout i saw Hare running and it was hard running up that steep hill. We had to spray our feet so that the plants don’t die. When i made it to the lookout everybody looked like little ants and there was Whaea Josie way down below waving at us.

Reading  (Y3-8)
In the classroom we cater to the children’s individual differences of ability.  One of the strategies we are learning is how to write a book review for a non-fiction book.
We are expecting the children to read at home for 15 to 20 minutes everyday

Me and my group went with Whaea Molly and we went to echo on the second layer of the dam then we laughed and we saw some of Sutton Park School children,
At the end we found the people that were lost and we went back school

Then we went to the lookout we had to spray our shoes so we can keep our environment safe from diseases we just went half way and then we had to go back caues Whaea Molly thought we would miss our bus felt like running back down. I did. It was fun.

We saw the ponga tree and flax and how Maori make taonga

Learning Intentions (Y3-8)
At Sutton Park school all the classes are working on Learning Intentions.  These tell children at the beginning of the lesson what we expect them to do.  This is written up on the board and the class quotes it before we start.  We have a set of the learning intention published in our classroom so that the children can refer to them whenever they get stuck as to what they are doing. These are the intentions we are working on for the first term.  You are welcome to come to our class to read them

Nga Kaupapa me Nga Ture (Y3-8) are also learning about rules and responsibilities in the classroom.  They should be able to follow these and also follow the Maori Values of Manaaki, Awhina, Tautoko and Aroha.  They should also understand the consequences of breaking the rules.  Good behaviour good consequences and rewards. Example: extra swimming time, playing a favourite game.   Bad behaviour – like incomplete work – bad consequences.  Example:  staying in to finish work.  We are also revising transport rules how to be safe crossing the road.

Intermediate Options

Year 7/8
They have most of their curriculum activities with the rest of Room 19.  They have maths cross grouping with the intermediate children and they are sorted to work with a group near the maths level they understand.  Ask them who their maths teacher is.  This teacher will give them maths homework.

They will go to technology classes with their peer groups.  Over the course of the year they will do 8 different types of technology activities.  They also have language classes.  They will do two languages this year and another two next year.  This will help they with their language options when they go they college.  They also have sport with the older children and may be chosen to represent the school at these sports.  At the moment the year 8 are learning the waterwise program that includes both yachting and kayaking,
